Singer/songwriter Kevin Max turned in a top-billing performance for a new indie flick filmed earlier this year titled The Imposter. While the film nears completion for all the public to see, Max has released a few thoughts on the project as well as some answered questions regarding his participation in the film, as well as the Christian music and film industries...
"I felt the need to address a couple of issues after recieving a note from my manager greg carnes, after talking with the director for the film (Dan Millican)....i am not appearing at the premiere for the movie in Texas for a couple of different reasons.....1. is that i will be in LA during that time working on new music. 2. i was always under the impression that the film would be more edgy and candid, than in my limited opinion, it has become....and because of this, i want the people that will view this film to view it for themselves...and take something from it without me giving it credence or condemnation.I also want to state that in no way am i trying to persuade people from seeing it.....i think it will be very entertaining, and i do not doubt Millican's ability to edit together something for the Christian Industry, that will raise some questions, and point us towards understanding artists within that community......however, i always pushed for my character to be more realistic, in relationship to what i see behind closed doors in the christian industry....that is the story i felt needed to be told..along with a very raw and Non PC look at a christian struggling with his beliefs, period.....but as it is, this is not my film.....i didn't write it and i didn't have much creative say in the process.....so i wish this film the best....everyone including Millican was a joy to work with and i consider it a starting place opportunity for me in the film business....
As for the music, many people have asked me if i have written for the soundtrack and if i was behind the creating of any of the new music?....the answer is yes and no....yes, they are using some material from The Imposter project, but beyond that i did not write for any of the other material, with the exception of changing some the lyrics around on Grand Design's "Believe is an Act"......i am looking forward to working on Kansas's original "Carry On Wayward Son" with Kerry Livgren in Kansas, for the film....that song is a classic, so it should be done right....what you hear on the imposter website at this point is in demo form......
In summary, i think that Christian Cinema has a stigma attached to it, for very honest reasons....it is, much like Christian Music and Christian TV in general, a genre that is behind in creativity, honesty and innovation....i pray and work towards being an artist that can be transparent about my faith in the arts but at the same time deliver something that can be interesting to the general public....to be honest, when the words and teachings of Christ are used in a vehicle for entertainment, it should provoke and intrigue, not cause distaste and be used as an example for mockery and lack of vision...to quote a line from early dctalk 'if it's christian it oughta be better'.....sadly enough that little hip-hop phrase is far from the truth."
